I’ve got to be honest, I don’t care about the Snyder Cut.

It was announced yesterday that Zack Snyder’s version of Justice League will premiere on HBO Max (WarnerMedias new streaming service) in 2021. And it was met with cheers as fan’s who have been actively campaigning for years to see this version finally get what they want. I didn’t feel that way. In fact, I tweeted this on Tuesday a day before the official announcement came.

When I first watched League just under 3 years ago, I thought it was decent albeit a bit of a mess. Now, I still think it’s a mess. The story is predictable, the movie itself is kinda boring and you can tell that it was directed by two different people as the tone and colour palette jump between scenes. The best I could use to describe it is jarring, so it makes sense that people would want to see Zack Snyder’s vision as the movie we got clearly, was not it.

There have been numerous petitions and campaigns — which included a Times Square billboard and a chartered plane to fly a banner over Comic-Con — to#ReleaseTheSnyderCut in the two and a half years since the movie's release. And according to this Hollywood Reporter article, Toby Emmerich, chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures, was listening because on a morning in November, Zack and Deborah Synder got a phone call from their agent to let them know that the studio wanted to go forward with the Snyder Cut.

Personally, I wouldn’t call myself a Zack Snyder fan and that might be why I don’t really care about this cut. Some of his movies like Man of Steel and Sucker Punch are okay and I like 300. However, I didn’t like Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. That’s probably why I’m not excited about his version of the Justice League. B v. S to me was more style over substance. From a visual and sonic standpoint, the movie gets a thumbs-up from me. Hanz Zimmer and Junkie XL created what is probably my favourite score from a DCEU movie, from the Wonder Woman theme to Lex Luthor’s theme it all fit the tone of the movie. It is really good and I listen to it sporadically. It really good. And there are so many shots in this movie that are absolutely stunning. Here are some examples-

And that is just to name a few, the movie is gorgeous to look at. There are some that are direct parallels from the comics which show that from a visual standpoint, Zack Snyder and his team know what they’re doing. That isn’t to say he doesn't know what he's doing from a story standpoint, I just think there was too much crammed into B v. S for it to not seem rushed. The Death of Superman story arch is a huge one in the comic s and for it to be in the same movie that has Batman and Superman going at it, while introducingWonder Woman and the Justice League was too much. And that is part reason why I’m not emotionally invested in the Snyder Cut. While the way he departed from the film is tragic, there is a reason that version of the movie was not released. I wonder, if there is enough footage for a Snyder movie to be released, (apparently 4 hours worth) why not release that version in the first place

Releasing the Snyder Cut is a bold movie for a studio, in that it is almost unheard off, but it could also set a precedent that shouldn’t necessarily be followed. This could encourage fans that if they complain about something enough, they can change it and that is an unrealistic expectation. There will always be disappointments when you are invested in a property(I’m looking at you Game of Thrones) and we just have to move on because the chances of something like this happening again are slim. I guess what makes this campaign different from the petition to re-write season 8 of Game of Thrones or the petition to strike the Last Jedi from Star Wars canon is that this one had the backing of everyone involved as the actors were very vocal about wanting the Snyder Cut. I saw countless tweets from the cast saying they wanted that version of the movie, and U really do understand where they are coming from because they worked on something that was different from what we all saw and they want us to see that version, it makes perfect sense. And to see their joy when it was announced really is heart-warming.

Here is my issue with the campaign to release the Snyder Cut and it’s one that is set out in this Collider article. A lot of the people who want the Snyder cut were bullying people. No, I’m not saying everyone who wanted to see Zack Snyder’s vision is a bully. Some of them are passionate fans and I am not talking about them, I’m talking about those who harassed multiple Warner Bros. employees for months as well as those who thought the Snyder version might be worse than what we got because God forbid Zack Snyder make a movie that someone doesn’t like. It is very possible that the Snyder Cut could be 10 times better than what we got but there is a possibility that it could be worse and I honestly don’t think that the people who want this movie are prepared for that possibility. Some say that it is an extension of the director’s cut but this isn’t that, this is asking for a whole new movie and while it can be argued that Warner Bros. could make a ton of money from this (and they will), if this cut comes out and it’s not well received are they going to complain for ANOTHER cut to be released or will people finally let the matter go?

All in all, a lot of people are excited for this release and I can’t blame them, it’s something they wanted for so long and they are getting it and I am a firm believer in letting people enjoy things. Like I said in my tweet, it would be cool to see a different version of the movie and I will watch it when it is released, but if I never saw it again, I would be cool but maybe that’s because I’m not that big of a fan and it’s not that deep to me.
